What Are the RV Laws in Utah?

Make Sure You Are Familiar With These Laws

The State of Utah RV laws cover things like parking, storage, and registration, with specific rules for residential areas, intersections, and public streets. Generally, RVs can be parked on private property.  However, they must comply with local zoning and may be restricted in terms of duration, placement (e.g., not on sidewalks, meeting setback requirements), and use (cannot be occupied as a dwelling for storage). Trailers over 750 lbs require titling and registration, and drivers must follow specific safety laws, like using turn signals on all trailers and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance.

Parking and storage

  • Residential areas: Storing an RV is generally allowed, but check local zoning ordinances. Restrictions may include setbacks, hard-surface requirements, and limits on use as a primary dwelling while parked.
  • Public streets: Parking is prohibited within 30 feet of an intersection and on streets after snow or ice accumulation.
  • Duration: You cannot park an RV on a public street for more than 24 hours, or for longer than permitted by signs, meters, or markings.
  • Safety: You cannot park in a way that leaves less than 10 feet of space for other vehicles or in designated fire lanes or emergency access areas.
  • Use: A parked RV cannot be used for storage of goods or materials other than what is customary for recreation, and it cannot be occupied as a dwelling while parked on the property.

Registration and titling

  • Trailers over 750 lbs: Any travel or tent trailer weighing over 750 pounds must be titled and registered.
  • Fees: An initial and annual registration fee is required.

Driving and safety

  • Brakes and signals: All trailers must have connected brake lights and signals so other drivers can see them.
  • General safety: Drivers of passenger vehicles should be aware of the blind spots of RVs and trailers.

Other regulations

  • HOA rules: Homeowner's associations may have additional restrictions on RVs, so be sure to check with them.
  • Waste disposal: If occupying an RV on a property, you must have adequate and lawful provisions for waste disposal.
