Most the most common RV repair and maintenance tasks focus on keeping the vehicle and its systems functional, safe, comfortable, and your RV on the road. These repairs and maintenance will address wear and tear, environmental exposure, and the toll of regular use. The most frequent maintenance and repair areas:
- Tire Maintenance and Replacement: RV and camper tires endure heavy loads and long trips, leading to wear, dry rot, or blowouts. Even sitting in the sun and the action of the weather can cause a breakdown on the tire material We suggest regular tire pressure checks (according manufacturer specs), inspecting for cracks or uneven wear, rotating tires, and replacing them every 3-5 years regardless of tread depth due to exposure to the sun and weather. Ou monthly checks and/or replacements will depend on mileage or age. We commonly find that under-inflation, overloading, and UV damage will cause cracks in the tire sidewalls.
- Slide-Out and Awning Maintenance: RV “slide-outs” and awnings are prone to mechanical issues or fabric wear. We Lubricate slide-out mechanisms with dry lube, checking seals for leaks, and inspecting awning fabric for tears or mildew. We can also adjust the alignment or replace motors if needed. St. George Mobile RV Repair recommends inspection and lubrication every 3-6 months. We suggest cleaning awnings at least annually. We also recommend checking for misaligned slides and awnings, stuck mechanisms, or torn awning fabric. Although this will mostly be obvious to the RV owner.
- Brake and Suspension Maintenance: Both towable RVs and motorized RVs are reliant on brakes and suspension for safe towing or driving. We inspect brake pads, bearings, and shocks for wear. We also can repack wheel bearings with grease and replace seals. We also recommend that we check suspension components like leaf springs or bushings. These brake and suspension inspections and maintenance should be done annually or after every 10,000-12,000 miles for bearings. The brake components can be inspected and serviced as needed. We oftern discover worn brake pads, seized bearings, or cracked springs with out inspections.
- Exterior Cleaning and Protection: Like any other vehicle, the RV’s exterior faces UV rays, road grime, and weather, affecting appearance and durability. We highly recommend washing with RV-safe soaps, and applying a wax to protect against UV damage. We also suggest you check for cracks or damage to fiberglass, aluminum, or decals. Typically you will want to wash after each trip of any length, and wax annually or semiannually. This can reduce or prevent fading gel coats, surface oxidation, or damaged to decals.
Tips for RV Owners:
- Maintain a maintenance log to track each task and intervals.
- Buy a few quality tools like a tire pressure gauge, torque wrench, and sealant for DIY work.
- Schedule inspections with our professionals for complex systems (e.g., brakes, propane,, etc.) once a year
