Use These 5 Tips For a Successful “Work From Home” Experience From Your RV

The best way to be successful in your remote work on the road or business travel, is to create a plan before you leave home. By preparing properly, you can almost guarantee you have enough time and materials to both work and see the sights. Here are the top 5 tips for traveling while working remotely:

1. ESTABLISH A CHECK-IN POLICY

Before going away, it is always a good practice to check with your company to make sure that you can work remotely from any location without any restrictions. You should also establish a schedule for when you can connect with your managers and how often they want you to check in. If you plan to travel to different time zones,  be mindful of the time differences between your headquarters off and where you will be staying.  This will also guide you and ensure that you are finishing work and projects on time back at the office.

2. PLAN YOUR WORKLOAD AROUND YOUR ITINERARY

Once you choose the days you will want to be sightseeing, visiting family or enjoying your travel, you can schedule your work time around your travel plans. For example, you might want to spend an hour or so working early in the morning, then taking a break to go to the beach, hike, see sights and then come back and work for a few more hours in the RV.

3. FIND A PERSONAL WORKSPACE THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU

Living the laptop lifestyle means that you and laptop can travel anywhere.  It does not mean, however, that every location is ideal for you to work. If you perform better in a peaceful, quiet environment, you may not want to spend time working in a bustling café. If you like you can work either inside or right outside your RV.  If the crowd of family and friends proves to be too much, try to locate some potential workstation options before you arrive.  Or look into co-working spaces to stay productive during your work time.

4. DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR LAPTOP’S SECURITY

Remember that logging into unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks while traveling can open you up to hacking, fishing, fraud, and information stealing.  You may very well compromise the confidential documents on your laptop computer. Consider a virtual private network (VPN) while you travel or use your mobile phone as a portable hotspot so you can carry your Wi-Fi network anywhere with you, and not have to rely on whatever is available where you stop.

5. CREATE A PACKING CHECKLIST

For the time that you will be away from home, having everything you might need to work efficiently and effectively without any problems is crucial. Before you pack at home, make a packing checklist and double check it.  This will help you remember everything you may need for work. Packing extras or backups of things that you not easily replaceable is important in case something becomes damaged or lost as you move locations.
